MICHAEL COYNE

Five Ringed Circus

11 August - 4 September 2010
Internationally renowned photographer Michael Coyne has captured wars, revolutions and significant international events in a career spanning over 30 years.

Kodak commissioned photographer, Michael Coyne, a member of the prestigious Black Star photo agency, to be their representative at the Sydney Olympic Games. Michael’s considerable photographic skills are not that of the traditional sports photographer AND, because there were fifteen hundred of those people already present, he very thoughtfully and carefully contemplated an alternative approach.

Michael made the decision to focus on the invisible people, those rarely seen such as the train- ers, entertainers, volunteer staff, spectators and the cheer squads. All of these people are integral to the success of the games, but their roles are rarely acknowledged. These quirky, unusual and innovative statements about people on the periphery of the Games allow the viewer to experience another dimension from the predictable visual interpretation of the ‘athlete as hero’. The natural warmth and good humour expressed by the portrait subjects evokes a positive response in the viewer.
