To Nature

In my ceramics practice, I create forms that are inorganic, yet I am drawn to nature.

Away from my country, Taiwan, for many years of study, the land seems familiar yet also strangely unfamiliar to me.

Taitung is a quiet little country town and it was there that I chose to continue my teaching journey in Taiwan. Taitung is set in a magnificent natural environment and many consider it to be the last pure land in the country. The rice farms operate according to the season’s cycles and harvest time is the same year in and year out. It is there that I can recall my childhood memories.

Growing up in an agricultural village, my grandparents’ house was surrounded by rice fields. When the rice was ready to harvest the golden colour fields acted as a piece of artwork. The colour of the rice fields reminded me of the daffodils I used to tend when I was a horticulture student. The colours speak of nature’s cycle from the yellow-greenish flowers, which bloom in spring to the many shades of yellow in the rice harvest in the late summer. The plants, the colours, and the seasonal changes express the beauty of Nature and point to a more simple way to live.

Could we as human beings learn from Nature and try to live a simpler life?
